Failure To Launch

I do enjoy me some Matthew McConaughey... but this post isn't about him. I just finished uploading my website I've been working on for the past three-ish weeks, give or take a few days (ha).

Being a Tease.

So it's 5:46am. I'm almost to 7am! I've been conditioning for my all-summer night shifts and it's been working out well. Tonight/this morn, I read up on some flash tutorials and stuff. It's going to take awhile to brush up on my skillz. I also started designing my new website. It's going to have a 50s-vintage motif. Think like...TV Land-esque. Intrigued

I don’t have to look presentable at home.

The ‘rents threw me a grad party on Memorial Day at the golf club in Blue Springs. It’s the same place we have all the grad parties in my fam, but this was the first college one. It’s hard coming from a family of engineers and nurses to be the first graphic designer, so I think people appreciated the visual aids. Here are some pics:

Works from school. Jill sort of forced me to display these. I don’t even have half of these in my current portfolio. The interesting part of this table is that I found my “portfolio” from elementary school. I think those works got more of a looksie than anything else.

Who would’ve thought I’d see this display again? Man, it looked pretty slammin’ at nite.

I guess I should talk about what I’ve been working on, since I claim this is my design blog. Currently, I am working on some Super Saturday 12 stuff through Leah. You can find more info about the gig here. In addition to all the collateral that goes with that, I am still working on my personal site and possibly a logo for myself. I’m also trying to get some brochure designs in for the hospital for where my mother works. Recently, though, I started working on a layout for a website for a family friend of our’s. Here is a screencap thus far:

Oh, but back to my grad party. I got some sweet gifts (and ca$h moniez), one of my favorites being this pretty sweet purple water bottle. It’s no Sigg (Joyce), but it is aesthetically pleasing, it came with one of those cooler tubes you put in the freezer and a straw! But I’m not that into sucking, so I took it out. (laugh it up) Here is a picture of me and my sweet H20 bottle. And in my defense, yes, the picture of my “indifference” from a few posts down shows me wearing something similar. But I have 2 v-neck gray t-shirts and I always look shitty when I’m at home. Get over it!

Purple water bottle = thumbs up!

Updation Nation

For the time being, I am in Blue Springs, kickin’ it in my parent’s basement, in my old room. Though it’s familiar (I mean, it IS my room), it feels very foreign to me. It hasn’t really set in that I’m completely out of school and that I won’t really have a social life (for at least the six months I’ll be in Missouri). Especially since I’ll only be in Blue Springs for a bit over a week and then back to the ‘ville until August.

Post graduation : I came home for Mal’s wedding (see post below) and then I went back to Kirksville to finish packing up the rest of my stuff. Of course, no week in Kirksville would be complete without some drama and good (really good) times. All in all, a good week was spent there packing and the like, a few BBQs, beers with Megaman and I got to hang out with Amanda and Nate. I wish we could’ve all gotten closer sooner, but better late than never, I suppose.

I left Kirksville last Wednesday and my mom graduated from Webster University with her Masters in Nursing that same night. On Thursday, my dad, Ness and I drove back up to Kirksville to gather the remainder of my things.

What I learned : I have a lot of shit.

Since then, I’ve been unpacking, organizing, while still working on a few freelancin' projects for Leah so I’ve been keeping busy. I also have been sending out my work to some people the ‘rents know, so I will be bringing in my own work soon (hopefully). Today, we’re going to a graduation downtown and tomorrow is my graduation party (joint one with my mom). I’ll post pics. Here is one to hold you over until my next update:

Indifference in old room. Things to notice: random dolphins, The All-American Rejects & Blink-182. Some things never change.

Until next time,

Jessica

I'm FREEEEEEEE-lancin'

One of my best friends, Mallory (since freshman year of high school, man!) got hitched to Dane (her high school sweeeetheart oolala).

Guess who caught the bouquet...?
Don’t worry... “Career first, baby,” - CT, The Real World Paris, mocking Diem, RW/RR Challenge: Freshmeat.

Oh.
I GRADUATED!

Currently, I’m workin’ on some freelance for Leah. Super Saturday 12 stuff, an e-vite and a fun graph! Updates on that work on the flipside.

Show-stoppin'

10 days ago, I had my senior show---the show that I have been mentally preparing for for the past five years and physically preparing for all semester. MAN. It was DA BOMB. I got a lot of good feedback and compliments and I even scored the spot in the gallery that I called “the spot of my viscom dreams.” Here are some pictures:

Circa 9:00am of the show: setting up my display. Special thanks to Jimmy for the velcro (remnants from his own show the week prior). The chalkboards came a long way, if I do say so myself!

Self-promotional piece: candy wrapped up with my contact information:

Posing with the parental units. They (along with the rest of the fam, minus my little cousins and Jessamine (who had a final)) drove up 3 hours to see my show! They’re da bomb!

I really enjoy this picture. The woman to my left is Professor Breed, who I had for Design I, four years ago. I joked with her that I came a pretty long way since that class (not so far-fetched).

Some product shots:

More self-promotional shots:

I would like to close with a quote that someone wrote in my year book in 5th grade: “Don’t frown because it’s over, smile because it happened.” Or in my case, go to the Dukum for some celebratory drinks.

Stayin’ classy in da ‘ville.
